Most crazy awesome Micheal Milano made this to show off a bit of the process he uses in the studio.

The texture is great, wish I could hand paint like that.
But... Don't you rig before painting?
A couple of times I've had to redo geometry in the past because the polys didn't look good when animated. Better to do that before painting, plus rigging is quicker and easier when using a quad mesh IMHO.
However, everyone has their own workflow, if you are confident that it won't need redoing then you can rush on with the project.
